Session Activities

Activity 1: Star
(December 3)

This activity coordinates with pages 8-15 from the Advent Experience Guide.

Just as a well-crafted story is like a single thread, the twine will hold each piece of our story, starting with a star—a representation of the hope in the promise God made many years before Bethlehem: The people who are now living in darkness will see a great light (Isaiah 9:2 NIrV). As our story unfolds, we’ll see the light God has promised come to life, lighting up the world like the brightest blazing star in the dark night sky.

Activity 2: Angel
(December 10)

This activity coordinates with pages 16-23 from the Advent Experience Guide.

Suddenly, an angel appeared, and the Christmas story was set into motion: Mary would carry God’s own Son and deliver Him into the world! Although she was told this is “good news,” Mary was confused and afraid at first—just like anyone would expect. Because of her faith in God’s plan, Mary was ultimately at peace with her role in God’s grand story. Let this season be a reminder God’s peace is available to all of us, regardless of our circumstances.

Activity 3: Wreath
(December 17)

This activity coordinates with pages 24-31 from the Advent Experience Guide.

A wreath is a symbol of welcoming and of open doors, but all of the guest rooms in Bethlehem were full. Mary and Joseph had to stay where the animals stayed.  It was in this humble place that the Son of God was born—and He was placed in an animal’s feeding trough! What an unexpected welcome into the world. Despite being caught in a less-than-ideal circumstance, God gave Mary and Joseph the biggest source of joy imaginable—Jesus! God gives us this source of joy too, no matter the circumstances we’re walking through this season.

Activity 4: Heart
(December 24)

This activity coordinates with pages 32-39 from the Advent Experience Guide.

Throughout history and the Bible, the greatest love story of all time is being told—the story of a God who will go to any length to save His people. And Christmas is one of the biggest moments in that story!  The most amazing thing is, God has chosen each one of us to be a part of that love story too. God sent Jesus into the world for all of us because of His love for us. Now, that’s something worth celebrating this season!

Activity 5: Jesus is Born!
(December 25)

This activity coordinates with pages 40-43 from the Advent Experience Guide.

Today is the big day… Jesus’ birthday! When we think of Jesus, we might think of:

  • a tiny Baby lying in a manger, maybe surrounded by farm animals
  • a sopping wet Man being baptized in a river in the middle of nowhere or, a Preacher teaching thousands of people on a hillside.

And while all of those are true pictures of Jesus, Jesus’ life and death are the reason for our hope, joy, love, and peace. Today, we celebrate the birth of Jesus, not just for the gift that it was, but for the ultimate sacrifice He made for you and for me.
